Hey! I’m Joel Stephens, and I’m from Elgin, SC. I’m currently studying Middle School Math Education at Lander University. I’m proud to be a Teaching Fellow and part of the Honors College — both have shaped me into the teacher I’m becoming. Teaching isn’t just a career for me — it’s a calling. I’ve always had a passion for helping others and guiding students toward success, both academically and personally.
Growing up in a small town taught me the value of hard work, community, and faith. My experiences at Lander have helped me grow not just as a teacher but as a person. Whether it’s working through a tough math problem or encouraging a student who’s struggling, I aim to approach every moment with patience and understanding.
Outside of teaching, I love spending time outdoors. Fishing is one of my favorite ways to relax and reset — there’s something peaceful about being on the water. I also enjoy hiking and exploring new trails whenever I get the chance. Staying active is important to me, and working out helps me stay focused and balanced.
My faith is a big part of my life. I’m involved in BCM (Baptist Collegiate Ministry) at Lander, where I serve on the worship team. Being surrounded by a strong faith community has shaped my outlook and given me a sense of purpose. Spending time with friends and attending church have also been some of the most meaningful parts of my college experience
I believe that teaching is about more than just helping students succeed academically — it’s about helping them grow as individuals. Every student who walks into my classroom deserves to feel seen, valued, and capable. My goal is to create a learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and discovering their strengths.
I’m passionate about helping students build confidence in math, especially those who feel like they "aren’t good at it." I want to be the teacher who helps them realize they are capable of more than they think.
My goal is to become a middle school math teacher who makes a lasting impact on my students. I hope to create a classroom culture built on trust, respect, and curiosity — where students feel encouraged to take ownership of their learning.
I’m excited about the future and ready for whatever comes next. Teaching is more than a job — it’s a chance to shape young minds and inspire a lifelong love of learning.
